MEDICARE PART C
Medicare Part C: Medicare Advantage & Other Medicare Plans
Medicare Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage. It combines the benefits of Part A, Part B, and Part D into a single, managed care plan like an HMO or PPO. Since most Part C plans also include prescription drug coverage, there may be no need to buy Part D drug coverage. You pay a monthly premium for a Part C plan.
Medicare Advantatge plans are health insurance plans that are approved by Medicare but run by private companies. They are part of the Medicare program. If you join a Medicare Advantage plan you are still in Medicare.
With a Medicare Advantage plan you generally get all your Medicare health care through that plan. Plus you may get extra benefits like coverage for vision, hearing, dental, health and wellness programs, etc. You usually will have to pay some costs in addition to your premiums (such as co-payments), but out-of-pocket costs are generally lower than in the Original Medicare plan. Further, you don’t need to buy a ‘Medigap’ supplemental insurance policy.
Like other ‘managed care/network’ health plans, you may be limited to certain doctors and hospitals that belong to the plan. There are a number of different types of Medicare Advantage plans, including HMO and PPO plans.
Special Needs Plans
Medicare Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are a type of Medicare Advantage Plan tailored for people with certain chronic diseases and conditions or who have specialized needs. For more information, see the link below.
Other Medicare Health Plans
There are some other types of Medicare health plans that include prescription drug coverage. These include Medicare Cost Plans, Demonstration/Pilot Programs, and Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (also known as PACE).
