Senior Date Ideas
“While stress and loneliness can cause negative changes to our biological systems, taking time to connect with others can help activate more beneficial processes—such as the release of oxytocin,” says Mara Zaraska, author of Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism, and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100.
Exchanging cards or tokens of affection such as flowers and candy are traditional ways to honor loved ones, there are many other ways to show them you care.

Romantic Ideas for People 65 and Older
“The best and beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” — Helen Keller
There’s nothing worse than getting stuck in a rut with your partner. Eating Chinese takeout and catching up with your favorite TV show is fine once in a while but it can get boring.
Remember you are never too old for love and romance. The best way to enjoy dating later in life, and up the romance level, is trying some fun new adventures.
If you get stuck for ideas, here are a few fun and romantic activities to add to your couples bucket list.
Hold my hand
Physical affection including hugging and kissing is a normal part of a healthy and loving relationship. Public displays of affection shouldn’t be a cause for embarrassment just because you’re getting older. Take a minute to put your phone down, and go for a stroll in your favorite park, or around your neighborhood while holding hands with your partner.
Recreate your first date
Do you remember your first date? A nice romantic gesture if you’re married or in a long-term relationship is to recreate your first date. Did you go dancing, meet for drinks at a local bar, enjoy a meal at a favorite restaurant? This is a sure-fire way to impress your significant other.
Time to laugh
Yes, sometimes laughter is the best medicine! Find time to laugh by surrounding yourself with people who tickle your funny bone.
Laughing has many benefits for seniors including:
- Decreased depression and anxiety
- Increases endorphin levels, your body’s natural pain killers
- Lowers blood pressure
- Boosts your immune system
From enjoying a rom-com marathon with a special someone to going to open mic night at a local comedy club there are many ways to add more joy to your life.
Try new things
Don’t be afraid of trying new things. If you’re looking for opportunities to meet new friends or find a new romance, get off the couch and get active.
Volunteer at a non-profit organization, try your hand at being creative at a Sip and Paint project or join a MeetUp group. You could also start a new hobby or rekindle an old one such as hiking, cycling, or kayaking. These are all great ways to help you meet people with similar interests.
Who doesn’t like the convenience of Instacart, PostMates, or GrubHub? Having food and groceries delivered right to your front door is a luxury that is becoming more and more common. But whatever happened to cooking from scratch?
Take time to slow down, cook a delicious meal and eat dinner in your own home. To really set the mood, instead of eating in front of the TV, set the table with your best dishes for a fancy, festive, romantic meal with your spouse.
Have you ever wanted to stay at a beach house on the shore or live in a quaint cottage in the mountains? Rent a cabin in the woods via Airbnb or Vrbo for a romantic weekend getaway with your beau.
These short-term rentals are a step up from a normal hotel offering you a complete home-away-from-home experience with fully stocked kitchens and other luxuries. Some are even pet-friendly if you’d like to bring your fur babies with you.
Dance the night away
Get ready to bust a move. Dancing is a fantastic way to spend a romantic night with your partner. It’s also a great way to tone your entire body, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your balance and posture, and increase your stamina and flexibility.
Ballroom dancing, salsa, disco, swing, tap and line dancing are all popular dance styles for seniors. A study by the New England Journal of Medicine even reported that dancing was associated with a reduced risk of dementia. So, get dressed up and enjoy an evening filled with live music as you twirl your partner around the dance floor!
Dinner and a movie
Dinner and a movie is a classic way to enjoy date night with a favorite friend or special someone. You can even stay in and enjoy a meal filled with special treats while watching a movie if you’d rather not go out.
But for a special occasion, get dressed up and grab a bite to eat at your favorite restaurant before heading to the theater. Some luxury cinemas like Cinepolis even let you order food and drinks right from the comfort of your own seats. Fancy!
Love at Any Age
Whether you’ve been together for 30 years or 30 days, Valentine’s Day and other romantic celebrations are for everyone. The longer you’ve been together the more important it is to carve out time to spend with your true love.
And, bonus points, scheduling regular romantic outings will help strengthen and improve your relationship!
