Getting to Know Medicare Part B

Medicare Benefits Solutions
May 4, 2020

Medicare Part B can provide important care and coverage for Medicare recipients. Also known as Medical Insurance, Part B helps cover preventive care and medically necessary services that meet accepted standards of medical practice.  Early detection and treatment can have a huge impact on positive outcomes for many diseases, so preventive services and access to doctors can have long-term consequences for your health and well-being.

Although it is optional coverage, most Medicare recipients choose to enroll in Part B when they are first eligible in order to avoid late enrollment penalties when they choose to sign up later. You will likely pay a premium for Medicare Part B, and will be responsible for a yearly deductible, coinsurance and/or copayments.

Part B covers a wide range of important services and supplies, including, but not limited to:

  • Welcome to Medicare visit
  • Yearly Wellness visits
  • Screenings and tests necessary to diagnose illness or injury
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) including wheelchairs and walkers
  • Ambulance services
  • Mental health services
  • Surgical second opinions
  • Limited outpatient prescription drugs administered in a doctor’s office or hospital outpatient setting

If you receive services covered under Part B, you will likely pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount as long as you visit a medical provider who accepts assignment.
